Portfolio

By portfolio is understood a collection of graphics that lie loose, collected in a portfolio, not like a book, which is firmly bound. A portfolio is quite often augmented with an accompanying explanation that lists the individual sheets and gives more information about their composition.
For the most part, portfolios are produced in small runs; in addition, the graphics are often oriented towards an overarching theme, such as for example the graphic series of an artist on a particular subject. One often finds portfolios in the modern art of expressionism; they can also be found, however, in older graphics which have come loose from folio volumes.
